The IPL ninth season was played in 2016, and they knew it as IPL 9 or Vivo IPL 2016 for sponsorship reasons. The season began on April 9, 2016, and Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore competed in their last match at Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, concluding on May 29, 2016. LED stumps made their debut during the 2016 Indian Premier League season, following the 2012 IPL spot-fixing scandal that suspended the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years. The IPL awarded positions to two new franchises in their place. The process founded Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants in 2012.
Ben Cutting received the MVP of the final game, and Sunrisers Hyderabad won their second IPL title then. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Mustafizur Rahman received the emerging player of the season, and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli received the most valuable player of the tournament. With 973 runs, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli topped the tournament in runs scored, and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar topped the tournament in wickets with 23.
This season, along with 2012 and 2021, had a team outside of the top two at the conclusion of the league stage win an IPL title since the introduction of the page playoff system. The other two seasons were the only ones where one of the top two teams missed out on qualifying for the final.
