The Indian Premier League, India’s top Twenty cricket competition, began its fourth season in 2011, also known as IPL 4 or the IPL 2011. The organizers hosted the tournament’s opening and closing ceremonies in India at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, home of the Chennai Super Kings, the reigning champions. The 2011 season ran from April 8, 2011 to May 28, 2011.
Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs in the final in Chennai to claim the tournament for the second year running. Murali Vijay was declared as the Man of the Match. With this win, CSK became the first team to win the IPL more than once. One of Bangalore’s players, Chris Gayle, earned the title of best player of the tournament despite his team not winning the championship. After joining the squad in the middle of the season as a replacement for another overseas player who was injured, Dirk Nannes, he scored 608 runs in twelve matches, most in the league, and also took eight wickets.
Lasith Malinga of Mumbai Indians took a record 28 wickets for the season, most wickets taken in an Indian Premier League season. But after Bangalore defeated Mumbai in the second qualifier, Mumbai had to accept third position in the tournament. Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai represented India at the tournament of Champions League 2011 in September. The tournament awarded the Fair Play Award to Chennai Super Kings as they secured the first position in the fair play table again.
