Punjab Kings History
Punjab Kings joined the IPL in 2008 as Kings XI Punjab. They were rechristened PBKS in 2021 to get a new identity and upgrade the team’s vision. Through the years, PBKS have been home to legendary talents like Adam Gilchrist, Yuvraj Singh, KL Rahul, Glenn Maxwell Chris Gayle and Mohammed Shami.
The franchise has been praised for playing aggressive cricket on numerous occasions, but they have also faced issues of inconsistency over the years, particularly when it comes to high pressure situations. The PBKS had its most successful season ever in 2014 when they finished runners-up, led by Glenn Maxwell and David Miller, but fell short against Kolkata Knight Riders.
The franchise had inconsistent fortunes between 2018 and 2024, often ending mid-table. The 2024 season was a major let down, as PBKS finished at the 9th position. Leadership stability Team balance Ahead of IPL 2025, the management has strongly believed in leadership stability and team balance announcing Shreyas Iyer as their new captain.
Punjab Kings Highs (Updated)
- 2014 IPL Season was their best season (placing 2nd in Final).
- Resulted in players like KL Rahul emerging as one of the most consistent run-scorers in the history of IPL.
- Have had star-studded bowlers like Rabada, Shami, Arshdeep Singh and international batting superstars like Chris Gayle.
- In the past few years, PBKS has found power-hitting Indian batting talent like Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma.
Punjab Kings Lows
- PBKS is one of the original franchises that has never claimed an IPL trophy.
- The constant change in captaincy has also not helped the team stability.
- During 2008 to 2024, the team managed to qualify only two times i.e., in 2008 & 2014.
- A number of seasons (2016, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025) concluded with mid-table or bottom-table finishes because of patchy batting depth and death bowling malfunctions.
