History of Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians were expected to perform as a high-profile franchise upon their induction in the IPL in 2008 but they had to grow into themselves. That turning point came in 2013, when Rohit Sharma was made the captain and led MI to their first IPL title. What ensued was an age of supremacy – five title wins from 2013 to 2020, the most by any franchise till date.
MI have made a name for themselves in producing and nurturing quality talent over the years. It was MI system where players like Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya brothers, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav became known cricket faces.
But the team dipped after 2021. In 2022, they finished last in their worst season. The 2024 captain cause célèbre, which made a national opera out of replacing Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya, signalled the beginning of one.
