Matthew Hayden has been appointed as the batting coach of Gujarat Titans for Indian Premier League 2026 season. Hayden, one of the most destructive opening batters of his time, adds to a seasoned support staff that already features head coach Ashish Nehra, director of cricket Vikram Solanki and assistant coach Parthiv Patel.
Hayden said he was excited to join the franchise and help build a strong batting culture after taking up his new role. Good batting, he said, does not only yield runs but also dictates the game and allows pressure on the opposing side. His philosophy marries up with that of the Gujarat Titans‘ aim to build an explosive and reliable batting order in seasons to come.
Hayden has extensive experience internationally with the team. He was a member of the squads that won both the 2003 and 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. He is also a part of the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognizes his incredible contribution to the game.
Hayden appeared in 32 matches for the Chennai Super Kings during his IPL playing career. He was a pivotal part of the team winning the 2010 IPL title and he also became tournament’s highest run-scorer in 2009. His experience in T20 cricket and understanding of Indian conditions should come in very handy for Gujarat Titans’ batters.
Hayden’s appointment is a tactical move to bolster the team’s batting philosophy and that’s according to Solanki. His experience at the highest level and his capability of mentoring the young guns will be beneficial for us as a franchise to build our batting identity.”
Coming in on the back of their impressive IPL journey captained by Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans are in good form. The team claimed the title in their inaugural season in 2022 and finished as runners-up the following year, in 2023. After placing eighth in 2024, they rebounded to place third at the tournament in 2025.
The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League will start on March 28 although the complete schedule has not been revealed yet. Hayden has been roped in by Gujarat Titans as they look to bolster their batting line up, and launch yet another strong title challenge in the IPL.
