Australian Men’s Cricket Team vs India National Cricket Team Timeline: 1947 to 2025 Early Encounters

1947 to 1970: Early Encounters

  • 1947-1948 Australia vs India: It is the first test match between Australia and India held in Brisbane in 1947, when India toured Australia for the 1947-1948 test series. This series is important for the Indian team as it was their first test series after independence. Australia secured a big win in this match, winning by an innings. Donald Bradman, captain of the Australian team, scored a century with 185 runs in the match. 
  • In the 1947-1948 Australia vs India test series, Australia completely dominated India, winning the matches by 4-0, and 1 match ended with a draw. This tour significantly marked the commencement of India’s test matches against Australia, which was a five-match test series. Australia cleaned-swept India on their home soil. Donald Bradman, Arthur Morris, Arthur Hassett, and Neil Harvey are the key players from the Australian team who scored a century in the series. Donald Bradman scored a double century with 201 runs in the 4th test match of the series. On the other hand, from the Indian team, Mulvantrai Mankad, Vijay Hazare, and Dattaray Phadkar also scored a century and were praised by their fans for their commendable performances. 
  • In the 1956-1957 Australia vs India Test series, once again, Australia dominated India by winning the series 2-0. The 2nd test match ended in a draw.
  • In 2nd test match of the 1959-1960 India v Australia series, which was held at Kanpur, India secured its first ever win in the Whites against Australia by 119 runs. India won the toss and chose to bat first. They scored 152 & 291, unfortunately, Australia couldn’t chase the target of the Indian team and scored 219 & 105 and lost the match. Nari Contractor (74 runs) and Ramnath Kenny (51 runs) scored a half-century each in the match. 
  • 1964-1965 India v Australia- In the 2nd test match of the series, India once again humbled Australia, winning the match by 2 wickets. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first and scored 341 & 256/8, while Australia managed to score only 320 & 274. 
  • In the 1969-1970 India vs Australia 5 match test series, Australia took over the series 3-1. However, the second game of the series ended with a draw between India and Australia. This time, India was again invited to Australia for the series. Australia once again cleaned-swept India on their home ground. This series is considered an iconic series as both teams gave each other a tough competition.  
  • 1980-1981 Benson & Hedges World Cup Series- In the 3rd match of the series at Melbourne, India excels over Australia, winning the game by 66 runs. Welcomed to bat first, India set the target of 209 runs in 50 overs for Australia. In the second innings, Australia made their full efforts to achieve the given target, but couldn’t make it and scored only 142 runs in 42.1 overs. Sandeep Patil scored a half-century in the match with 64 runs and also won the title of Man of the Match for their exceptional performance in the match.

  • 1993-1994 Pepsi Austral-Asia Cup-  In the first semi-final match held at Sharjah on 19th April, 1994, India secured a win over Australia by 7 wickets. The Australian team set the target of 245 runs in 50 overs. In the second innings, India chased the target of 245 runs in 45.4 overs with 3 wickets down. Ajay Jadeja (87 runs) and Navjot Sidhu (80 runs) scored a half-century in the match. Ajay Jadeja won the title of Man of the Match for his commendable batting performance. 
  •  1994-1995 Singer World Series- India secured a win in the 4th match of the series over Australia by 31 runs. This is the iconic match because Sachin Tendulkar, a great Indian batsman, scored a century by 110 runs in the match. He also won the Man of the Match title for his phenomenal performance. 
  • 1996 Wills World Cup- Australia secured a fighting win in this match, winning by 16 runs. The Australian team set the target of 259 runs for the Indian team. When India were welcomed to bat, they made their full efforts to chase the target, but they scored only 242 runs in 48 overs and lost the match. Mark Waugh, the opening batsman of Australia, scored a century with 126 runs. He was awarded the title of Man of the Match for his commendable performance.
