The Indian Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket (T20) league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008, celebrated its thirteenth season in 2020. It was also known as IPL 13 and was promoted as Dream11 Indian Premier League 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the starting date of the tournament on March 29, 2020, was rescheduled to April 15, 2020. The competition was put on hold indefinitely by the BCCI after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on April 14, 2020, that the nation would stay under lockdown until at least May 3, 2020.

The league stage was to commence on 29th March 2020, when the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, who were the last season’s runners-up, were to play their first match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. On March 12, 2020, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray made it clear that IPL matches were only possible in the state if they were to be held in empty stadiums due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

A BCCI spokesperson informed CNBC TV18 on April 9, 2020 that the Board was considering staging the tournament in July or the winter, or even behind closed doors, when India was under lockdown across the country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement on April 14, 2020, that the tournament would be postponed again and the lockdown would continue until at least May 3, 2020. The competition was suspended indefinitely by the BCCI the following day because of the pandemic.
Vivo revealed their withdrawal as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) 2020 season on August 4, 2020. Dream11, a fantasy cricket league platform, was announced as the season title sponsor at a bid of ₹222 crore (US$25 million) on August 18, 2020
